What’s the difference between extruded polystyrene (XPS) and polyurethane?

Extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) is more consistent and more hydrophobic (to prevent water absorption) than polyurethane. It’s developed by pulling foam through a die, which creates a closed cell structure. This extrusion process eliminates foam voids and enables precise control of key foam physical properties, such as density, compressive strength, cell size and orientation, to ensure minimal thermal conductivity and provide consistent R-values.

Polyurethane is much less reliable. It is developed when a chemical reaction is injected into a mold. Often times, cells of irregular size and shape are formed. These cells can easily compromise the integrity of the insulation, allow heat to penetrate, and greatly reduce its R-value.

Why should I be concerned with polyurethane insulation?

When compared to XPS insulation, polyurethane insulation panels provide less uniformity and more points of weakness. In fact, these panels often become deteriorated and “soft.” This occurs when polyurethane expands between two metal skins and leaves voids and soft perimeters. To account for this, wood or high-density foam is typically added to the perimeter to make “hard-nose” panels. Unfortunately, wood carries a very low R-value, making the joints of these polyurethane panels yet another area for thermal movement. In addition, polyurethane does not have the hydrophobic characteristics of XPS, reducing the endurance of its R-value.

How will I receive my panels?

Our integrated production network allows us to produce precision-quality products quickly. Each panel comes conveniently wrapped and automatically labeled with key information, such as job and panel numbers, customer name and shipping address, carrier name, and pro number. You can rely on AmeriKooler to ship a perfect walk-in unit and refrigeration system to you on time, every time. All panels are clearly marked and easy to unload. Every product we ship is protected in transit and at the job site until installed. And because our packaging materials are 100% recyclable, they’re easy to dispose of.
